12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
그러므로 너희는 하나님의 택하신 거룩하고 사랑하신 자처럼 긍휼과 자비와 겸손과 온유와 오래 참음을 옷입고
Therefore, because Christ is all in all (v.11), because He is all the reason why you are a Christian, and why you can live the Christian life out, now wear him! This is not just putting on and pretending, but a union language that says we are in him, he in us, and therefore we have his qualities. The biblical ‘wearing’ of a garment makes the person who the garment represents him to be! e.g. Joseph’s long coat, the priest’s holy garments.
13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
누가 뉘게 혐의가 있거든 서로 용납하여 피차 용서하되 주께서 너희를 용서하신 것과 같이 너희도 그리하고
Now because we are wearing Christ, we not only look like him but also act that he does/has done. He had a grievance, a charge against us, a grave one of going against him and making myself God instead and worshiping myself. But he endured it and forgave it.
14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
이 모든 것 위에 사랑을 더하라 이는 온전하게 매는 띠니라
Not because love is some extra option, but because it is the way the Holy Spirit smears Christ’s qualities all over us. Whenever the oneness, union, binding language comes, we recognise it as the work of the HS.
15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
그리스도의 평강이 너희 마음을 주장하게 하라 평강을 위하여 너희가 한 몸으로 부르심을 받았나니 또한 너희는 감사하는 자가 되라
So-bound by the HS to Christ, the outcome our Christ has won for us is ours to possess and boast about – peace with God. This peace is not like Roman Pax where you boast it, but under it all possibilities of violence are suppressed and negotiated. It is peace where the natures of the two sides have become one. For this we give thanks, though the words cannot describe its meaning fully. It is certainly more than when you thank someone when they give you the change.
16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
그리스도의 말씀이 너희 속에 풍성히 거하여 모든 지혜로 피차 가르치며 권면하고 시와 찬미와 신령한 노래를 부르며 마음에 감사함으로 하나님을 찬양하고
So, this is the way we express the unspeakable ‘thanks’. The extreme version of thanksgiving is reading his words, understanding it, sharing between one another (like what you are doing now), encouraging, singing and humming the word and songs of praises.
17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
또 무엇을 하든지 말에나 일에나 다 주 예수의 이름으로 하고 그를 힘입어 하나님 아버지께 감사하라
Therefore, not a selection of your more presentable self in your opinion, but your whole being, you nephesh (literally ‘spirit’ in Hebrew, but really meaning the whole person – body, mind, spirit, reason, and whatever you can think of a person, all of it), its words and action is Christ’s. That is what it means you do them in His name. Your life is the thanksgiving to the Father.
Lord, I look at myself and feel so trivial, but you lift me up and say that I am worthy of Your glory. Indeed because of Christ’s work I am, whether I feel like it or not. Let me remember who I am in you today through the ordinary tasks of the day or more dramatic things in life. Let me live the peace you have fully installed for me, the never-shifting seat of comfort. And let me not forget to regard a person near me who you have loved and given yourself in the same way you have done to me. Let me give thanks by remembering and breathing as the person you have made me.
