1 Thessalonians 5.6–11 Waking Up

So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. 

그러므로 우리는 다른 이들과 같이 자지 말고 오직 깨어 근신할찌라

If Christ does not come to condemn us, if he comes to reward us, and if by such knowledge and expectation we are brought into light, then, we should live like we are in the light. From here on ‘asleep’ does not mean physically dead as in 4:13,14 any more. But metaphorically to sleep in spiritual sloth.[1] They are actually differentiated by using two different Greek words. The Isa  51:17 quotation

Wake yourself, wake yourself,
stand up, O Jerusalem,
 you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord

in Eph 5:14   

‘Wake up, sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.’

is another example of the usage of the latter word.  

For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 

자는 자들은 밤에 자고 취하는 자들은 밤에 취하되

In the subsequent verse in Ephesians it was said, ‘Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise’ (Eph 5:15). Paul says the same thing to the Thessalonians here but adding the imagery of light and darkness.

But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 

우리는 낮에 속하였으니 근신하여 믿음과 사랑의 흉배를 붙이고 구원의 소망의 투구를 쓰자

A shorter version of panoplia, the full armour of God in Eph 6:13-17. Not because the Thessalonians only need a little bit of it. But probably because they have been told about it many times before and therefore only a shorthand would suffice.

For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 

하나님이 우리를 세우심은 노하심에 이르게 하심이 아니요 오직 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 구원을 얻게 하신 것이라

For that panoplia, the full armour of God, is originally the gear our Christ wears to judge the world fairly and righteously (Isa 11:1-5). Again God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him (John 3:17).

10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 

예수께서 우리를 위하여 죽으사 우리로 하여금 깨든지 자든지 자기와 함께 살게 하려 하셨느니라

What Christ did wearing that full armour was to die for us! Interesting to note that though meaning those who have died physically, Paul uses the same word as ‘spiritually dead’ as if to round up our status, weather physically dead or alive, we were all in darkness and were dead in spirit in the past, but now live together with Christ because of what Christ did wearing God’s armour.   

11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

그러므로 피차 권면하고 피차 덕을 세우기를 너희가 하는것 같이 하라

These words are therefore to build each other up. Not to puff up as some false and vain knowledge (1 Cor 8:1), to make us patient and kind etc….. (1 Cor 13) toward each other because we know our fate in Christ and we promote that light, Christ who saved us from the coming wrath by his own death – This is our awakening.

Lord, thank you for remining us who we are and what we are. Thank you for waking us up and bringing us into light even before we knew what light and darkness was. Now we come to know what darkness you have come into to bring up out of it and into light. Let us belong and remain in that light. Let us remember how you have been patient and kind with us so much to wear that full armour and die for us. Let us praise and promote your love for us by remembering and copying you as much as we can today. Be with us and enable us. Dear Lord our Saviour.
