When he has so saved us and created us anew, there is no stranger in him, but all are fellow citizens and members of the same household. So the state before and after is radically different—this was true even for those who thought they were ‘near’. They were not officially the family and temple of God until they were joined by those they used to exclude and, together with them, brought before God. Only then are they a whole, called a dwelling of God, where his Spirit lives. Thus, as Jerry Maguire learned to say, ‘You complete me’, I need ‘the others’, who are different from me, to be complete before God. Let me demonstrate this peace Jesus preached and accomplished for us today.
