Ephesians 에베소서 3.1–13

I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.

그러므로 너희에게 구하노니 너희를 위한 나의 여러 환난에 대하여 낙심치 말라 이는 너희의 영광이니라

Ephesians 3:13

It is not said to make them feel guilty, intimidate them, or patronise them. But to let them know who they are. Glory, as said before, is the visible form of who you are—who the Ephesians really are now—the children and the heirs of God, who because of our Lord Jesus Christ can approach God with freedom and confidence (v. 12). This is what even those who originally thought they were children of God could not do. But now that the mystery and intent are known and achieved by our Lord and his Holy Spirit, this can be done freely. To let them know this in the head as well as in the body was not an easy job for Paul, though he was called for it. Thus he ‘suffers’ to reveal their glory, their identity, and in turn, it makes Paul’s identity known—the servant of this gospel, a prisoner of Christ Jesus.

What makes you known for who you are? You can be many things, according to the various gifts God can give out, but if you find it in making others know who they really are, the heirs and children of God, that will be truly meaningful and in accordance with God’s intent. Lord, let me say a word or do things in a way that reassures those closest around me that they are children of God who can freely and confidently go to God.

죄책감을 느끼게 하거나, 위협하거나, 오버하려는 것이 아니라, 그들 자신이 누구인지 알려주기 위해서 바울은 이 말을 하고 있다. 앞에서 말했듯이 영광이란 내가 누구인지가 눈으로 볼 수 있는 형태로 나타나는 것이다. 즉 현재의 에베소 교인들이 진짜 누구인지, 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 인해 하나님께 자유와 담대함으로 나아갈 수 있는 하나님의 자녀이자 상속자라는 사실이 눈에 보이는 형태로 나타나는 것 – 이것이 그들의 영광이라 부르고 있다 (12절).  원래부터 자신들이 하나님의 자녀라고 생각했던 사람들조차도 하나님 앞에 그렇게 나아갈 수 없었다. 그러나 이제는 때가 되어 그 비밀과 뜻이 알려진 바 되었고 우리 주님과 그분의 성령께서 이를 성취하셨으니 우리는 하나님께 나아가는 일을 아무 거리낌 없이 할 수 있게 되었다. 이것을 머리 그리고 몸으로 알리는 것을 소명으로 받았음에도 불구하고 바울에게 이 소명은 쉬운 일이 아니었다. 고로 그는 그들의 영광과 신분을 드러내기 위해 ‘고난’을 감수하고, 그로 인해 또한 이 복음의 일꾼이자 그리스도 예수 때문에 갇힌 바울 자기 자신의 신분도 알게 된다.

내가 누구인지 알려 주는 것은 무엇일까? 하나님께서 주시는 다양한 은사에 따라 우리는 여러가지가 될 수 있다. 그러나 다른 사람들에게 자신들이 진정 누구인지, 즉 하나님의 상속자와 자녀이라는 사실을 알려주는 일에서 내가 누구인지를 발견할 수 있다면 그것은 참으로 의미 있고 하나님의 의도에 일치하는 것이다. 주여, 내 주변에 있는 사람들이 자유롭고 담대하게 하나님께 나아갈 수 있는 하나님의 자녀임을 확신시켜 주는 말과 행동을 하게 하옵소서.

• What do you need in order to make it work better or more consistently? 좀 더 잘 또는 좀 더 일관되게 작동되게 하려면 어떻게 해야할까요?
