Colossians 1.1–5 Our Hope

verse 1

(THGNT) Παῦλος ἀπόστολος χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ διὰ θελήματος θεοῦ καὶ Τιμόθεος ὁ ἀδελφὸς
(NASB2020) aPaul, ban apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,
(KorKLB) 하나님의 뜻에 따라 그리스도 예수님의 사도가 된 나 바울과 형제 디모데는
(DutSVVA) Paulus, een apostel van Jezus Christus, door de wil van God, en Timotheüs, de broeder,

From the word ‘apostle’ which comes from the Greek verb that means ‘to send’, we know that Paul did not come by his own intiative but was sent by Christ. Christ’s sending of Paul was in line with God’s will is that desires us to be resemble Him (to be Holy in other words, 1 Thess. 4:3). By the same God’s will in action, Timothy has become ‘our brother’.

‘보내다’라는 의미의 헬라어 동사에서 나온 ‘사도’ 라는 단어에서 우리는 바울이 자신의 결단으로 움직인 것이 아니라 그리스도께서 보내신 사람이라는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 그리스도께서 바울을 보내신 것은 하나님의 뜻에 따른 것인데, 하나님의 뜻은 우리가 하나님을 닮는 것 (다른 말로, ‘거룩해지는 것’ 데살로니가전서 4:3)입니다. 같은 하나님의 뜻이 일하심으로 디모데는 ‘우리 형제’가 되었습니다.

verse 2

(THGNT) τοῖς ἐν Κολοσσαῖς ἁγίοις καὶ πιστοῖς ἀδελφοῖς ἐν χριστῷ· χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη ἀπὸ θεοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν.
(NASB2020) To the saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ who are at Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father.
(KorKLB) 골로새에 있는 성도들과 그리스도를 믿는 형제들에게 하나님 우리 아버지의 은혜와 평안이 함께하기를 기도합니다.
(DutSVVA) Den heiligen en gelovigen broederen in Christus, die te Kolosse zijn; genade zij u en vrede van God, onzen Vader, en den Heere Jezus Christus.

To believe or to be faithful means that you are in Christ. Also, in Christ God’s grace of thinking and having plans for us, and His peace, the outworking of such plan has been accomplished. THerefore we ourselevs are the ones who display and testify God’s grace and peace.

믿는다는 것, 혹은 신실하다는 것은 우리가 ‘그리스도 안에’ 있다는 뜻입니다. 또한, 그 그리스도 안에서 하나님께서 우리를 생각하시고 위해서 계획하신 ‘은혜’와, 그 계획이 실제로 행하셔서 이루신 ‘평안’이 완성되었습니다. 그러므로 우리 자신이 바로 하나님의 은혜와 평안을 나타내고 증거하는 자들입니다.

verse 3

(THGNT) Εὐχαριστοῦμεν τῷ θεῷ καὶ πατρὶ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ πάντοτε περὶ ὑμῶν προσευχόμενοι,
(NASB2020) We give thanks to God, nthe Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,
(KorKLB) 우리는 여러분을 위해 기도할 때마다 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지 하나님께 항상 감사를 드립니다.
(DutSVVA) Wij danken den God en Vader van onzen Heere Jezus Christus, altijd voor u biddende;

That’s why (that we are the outcome of God’s grace and peace) whenever Paul prays for them, which is always, he cannot help but thank God, who is the Father of Jesus Christ, now their and our Father. This should also be our reason to give thanks all the time, when praying for someone, even if there weren’t any other outwardly apparent reasons for giving thanks.

그래서 (바로 우리가 하나님의 은혜와 평강의 산물이라는 사실) 바울은 그들을 위해 기도할 때마다—’항상’ —예수 그리스도의 아버지이시며, 이제는 그들과 우리의 아버지가 되신 하나님께 감사하지 않을 수 없습니다. 누군가를 위해 기도한다고 할 때, 비록 겉으로 드러나는 다른 ‘감사 제목’이 없을 때에도 항상 감사해야할 이유이기도 합니다.

verse 4

(THGNT) ἀκούσαντες τὴν πίστιν ὑμῶν ἐν χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ καὶ τὴν ἀγάπην ἣν ἔχετε εἰς πάντας τοὺς ἁγίους,
(NASB2020) since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love which you have for sall the saints;
(KorKLB) 그것은 여러분이 그리스도 예수님을 잘 믿고 모든 성도를 사랑한다는 말을 우리가 들었기 때문입니다.

(DutSVVA) Alzo wij van uw geloof in Christus Jezus gehoord hebben, en van de liefde, die gij hebt tot alle heiligen.

But Paul did have a particular reason to give thanks – that they love Jesus and love their neighbours! Which is perfectly in line with Jesus’ command (Matt. 22:36, John 13:34). This is also a proof that they are the result of God’s grace and peace betowed and acoomplished by Jesus Chirst.

그러나 바울은 감사할 특별한 이유가 있었습니다. 그것은 바로 그들이 예수님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑한다는 것입니다! 예수님께서 주신 계명과 완전히 일치하는 것이죠(마태복음 22:36, 요한복음 13:34). 또한, 이것은 그들이 예수 그리스도를 통해 베풀어지고 이루어진 하나님의 은혜와 평강의 열매라는 증거이기도 합니다.

verse 5

(THGNT) διὰ τὴν ἐλπίδα τὴν ἀποκειμένην ὑμῖν ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς ἣν προηκούσατε ἐν τῷ λόγῳ τῆς ἀληθείας τοῦ εὐαγγελίου
(NASB2020) because of the hope reserved for you in heaven, of which you previously yheard in the word of truth, the gospel
(KorKLB) 이 믿음과 사랑은 여러분이 전에 진리의 말씀인 기쁜 소식을 들어서 확신하고 있는 하늘 나라의 소망에 근거하고 있는 것입니다.
(DutSVVA) Om de hoop, die u weggelegd is in de hemelen, van welke gij te voren gehoord hebt, door het Woord der waarheid, namelijk des Evangelies;

Paul explains where their such love and faith come from — it comes from the hope in heaven—where Christ seated righthand of the Father. It means that Christ has done his job fully and succefully, and therefore we will be following his course too. In other words Paul is saying that your love and faith is the result of Jesus’s hard and good work that is done, finished and rewarded. So, it will be the same for us too! Our hard work of following Jesus will be continued, but will surely be completed, it will all have been worthwhile, and will be rewarded, acknowledged by our Father God. With or without knowing, this – this hope – is where their love and faith come from.

바울은 그들의 그러한 사랑과 믿음이 어디에서 오는지 설명합니다— ‘하늘에 있는 소망’으로부터. 그곳에는 그리스도께서 아버지의 오른편에 앉아 계십니다. 이는 곧 그리스도께서 자신의 일을 완전히, 그리고 훌륭하게 이루셨음을 의미하며, 따라서 우리도 그 길을 따라가게 될 것을 말합니다. 다시 말해, 바울은 그들의 사랑과 믿음이 예수님께서 힘들고 선한 일을 이미 다 이루시고 완성하셨고, 이에 대한 보상을 받으셨기 때문이라고 말하는 것입니다. 그러므로 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 우리가 예수님을 따라가는 모든 수고는 계속되지만, 반드시 완성될 것이며, 완전히 가치 있는 일이었으며, 우리 아버지 하나님께서 인정하시고 보상해 주시는 일일 것입니다. 이 사실을 인식하던 아니던, 그들의 사랑과 믿음은 바로 여기, 이 소망,에서 비롯된 것입니다.

Prayer

Lord, help us to stand back on our feet when we are discouraged. We are held by the most powerful force in the whole universe, which is the power that pulled Christ out of death and seated Him by your side in heaven. This power is at work with us today. Let me acknowledge it and not limit your love for me. Thank you for your love and your singlemindedness in having me as your child. Thank you that I have this hope and that this hope is unchanging.

주님, 우리가 낙심할 때 다시 일어설 수 있도록 도와주세요. 우리는 온 우주에서 가장 강력한 힘, 곧 그리스도를 죽음에서 일으키시고 하나님의 하늘 보좌 옆에 앉히신 그 능력에 붙들려 있습니다. 이 능력이 오늘도 우리와 함께 역사하고 있습니다. 내가 이를 인정하고, 주님의 사랑을 내 한계로 제한하지 않게 해주세요. 나를 자녀로 삼으시는 주님의 변함없는 사랑과 한결같은 뜻에 감사합니다. 저에게 이런 소망이 있는 것을 감사합니다. 이 소망은 변치 않는 것임에 감사합니다.
