Galatians 3.1-14 Law’s working or Faith’s hearing

He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

Galatians 3:14

We might think Abraham comes first by far, but according to Paul’s interpretation (v. 8), God’s thought of giving life to all nations ‘by faith’ comes first, and then he lets it known to Abraham in advance. In turn, Abraham ‘believes’ it. So then, what is the substance or object in which the Gentiles are to have faith or Abaraham is to believe? The fact that God does it, that it is God who gives you the reward without you doing anything, that he takes care of it, and that you just receive it. This reward is secured not by the system of the law but by realising it—that is, by having faith. The system of the law has different jobs; one of them is to let us know that we are in need of his giving it and his fulfilling it. And the receiving of the awaited reward, Himself, the Holy Spirit, takes place by knowing that God has it in store for me and gives it to me—that it is his grace.

  • What seems to have been the problem with the Galatian believers pattern of faith? Why is Paul calling them foolish? (vs.1-6)
  • Can you think of a similar pattern being present in you or the believers around you?
  • What is the possible downside of holding Abaraham up as the pioneer and exemplar of what having great faith is all about?
