Galatians 2.11–21 The Law of Grace

If I rebuild what I destroyed, then I really would be a law-breaker.

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Galatians 2:18, 20

Faith in the Son of God, our Christ, is like a cane with which I stand on the ground of his grace—that he loved me and gave himself for me. It is the thought of knowing there’s a father waiting for you. God prepared this grace for me; let it be embodied in Christ. This is the law of grace that gave me life and broke me away from the law of my own faith (based on a false conviction that I can do it, or I might be able to do it, or even I’d better do it myself). I was saved from hanging on the cross myself, but with me now knowing him, God counts the death of Christ just as good as my own doing and honours it as my attitude and outcome. The Old Testament laws of prophecy and promise of ‘You shall…’ have been accomplished outside of me and in Christ, but for and in relation to me as he let me wear his identity. This is a sheer gift without my taking any part in preparing it, but only to receive and accept it, so we call it the law of grace that no one is able to break.

  • Do you believe that it was this law of grace that pulled you to God and sustained you before him? Why can it not be explained otherwise, e.g., that your own effort has also made at least some contribution? What is it that you desire most to be credited for, nevertheless?
  • Why do you think it is hard to be persistent in this view of grace, as Peter showed us with his example in the passage? Is it only certain personality traits that are prone to making such mistakes? i.e., would it be harder for Paul to make a similar mistake?
  • What would be the best thing to do when you make a mistake so as to demonstrate with your thoughts, words, or action what is contrary to the law of grace? What kind of help would you need from those around you?
