Peter tells the scattered sojourners that, within God’s choosing, we have been brought to the sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ and to His obedience. This sprinkling is not our sacrifice but the cross of Christ, and this obedience is not a condition we must first produce, but the obedience of Jesus, who gave Himself to the Father’s will. Therefore, our present life as sojourners is not an accidental failure, but a path appointed by the triune God, where we are brought to encounter Christ’s blood and obedience. Though it may be a place we long to escape, may we come to treasure it as the place where grace and peace begin.
23. Therefore, the sprinkling of blood refers to the only way our sins are atoned for and we come out alive before God with new life: the cross borne not by us, but by Jesus Christ. Some may say that the blood was sprinkled when Longinus pierced His side. Yet even if that is what appears to our eyes, the truth is that Jesus Himself is the subject, willingly moving toward that death.
24. What about obedience? It is the same. This too is not a condition God demands from us. Rather, it is a form of faith shown to us by Jesus. It refers to His obedience to the Father’s will rather than His own, and to His prayer that not His will, but God’s will, be done.
27. Therefore, when we no longer fix our eyes on our present circumstances, but rely solely on who the triune God is—the God who has chosen us—all complaints, dissatisfaction, envy, and jealousy over our situation cannot help but disappear. For God’s decree is surely beyond comparison with anything else.
The Christian life as sojourners is not an accident or a failure, but a path held within the decree of the triune God. How does this truth change the way I view my present circumstances? What is the “sojourner’s path” in my life right now that I want to escape from or give up?
Peter greets the scattered sojourners by saying, “May grace and peace be multiplied to you.” When I fix my eyes not on my present circumstances but on the God who has chosen me, what complaints or comparisons can I lay down? How might God’s grace and peace be experienced in their place?
