이스라엘의 장로들이 왕을 요구한 것은 자신들이 스스로 왕을 정하고 세워야겠다는 교만 때문이었습니다. 하나님은 이미 신명기에서 왕이 될 자는 반드시 하나님께서 택하신 사람이어야 하며, 그 왕은 세상의 왕들처럼 군사력과 부와 권력을 쌓는 대신 평생 하나님의 말씀을 가까이 두고 읽으며 하나님 경외하기를 배우고 그 말씀에 순종해야 한다고 명하셨습니다. 사울보다는 다윗이 그런 왕이며, 다윗이 예표한 예수 그리스도만이 우리 위에 하나님께서 세우신 참된 왕이심을 예언하신 것입니다. 예수께서는 하나님의 말씀과 뜻을 하나도 빠짐없이 이루셨습니다. 그리고 주의 형제 된 우리 성도들도 함께 왕 같은 제사장의 신분을 얻게 하셨습니다. 사무엘과 같은 왕 같은 제사장으로서 성도의 할 일은 세상에서 큰 업적을 이루거나 더 많은 성공과 행복을 향해 정진하는 것이 아니라, 평생 하나님의 말씀을 가까이하며 하나님을 경외하고 순종하는 것입니다. 하나님을 영화롭게 하고 영원토록 그분을 즐거워하는 삶을 사는 것입니다.
The elders of Israel demanded a king out of the arrogance of believing that they themselves should choose and appoint one. Yet God had already commanded in Deuteronomy that the king must be someone He had chosen. Rather than accumulating military power, wealth and authority like the kings of other nations, he was to keep God’s Word close to him throughout his life, read it, learn to fear the LORD, and obey His Word. David, rather than Saul, was such a king, and God was foretelling that Jesus Christ, whom David foreshadowed, alone is the true King He has appointed over us. Jesus fulfilled every word and purpose of God without leaving anything undone. And He has granted us believers, who have become His brothers and sisters, the status of a royal priesthood with Him. As royal priests like Samuel, our calling is not to achieve great things in the world or strive for ever greater success and happiness, but to keep God’s Word close throughout our lives, fearing and obeying Him. It is to live a life that glorifies God and enjoys Him for ever.

1. 이스라엘의 장로들은 하나님의 다스림을 받기보다 자신들의 뜻대로 왕을 세우려 했습니다. 나는 어떤 부분에서 비교적 하나님께서 나를 다스리시도록 잘 순종하고 있습니까? 어떤 부분에서 내가 원하는 것을 이루기 위해 하나님을 찾고 있는 것 같은 찔림이 있습니까?
The elders of Israel sought to appoint a king according to their own wishes rather than submit to God’s rule. In which areas of my life am I doing relatively well in submitting to God’s rule? In which areas do I feel convicted that I may be seeking God simply to get what I want?
2. 하나님께서 정하신 왕의 의무는 세상의 왕들처럼 권력과 부를 쌓는 것이 아니라, 평생 하나님의 말씀을 읽으며 하나님 경외하기를 배우고 그 말씀에 순종하는 것이었습니다. 나에게 이 의무를 실제적으로 어떻게 적용할 수 있을까요? 가장 큰 도전은 무엇인가요?
The duty of the king appointed by God was not to amass power and wealth like the kings of the world, but to read God’s Word throughout his life, learn to fear Him, and obey His Word. How can I put this duty into practice in my own life? What is the greatest challenge for me?

How do you respond to the fact that, like the prophet Samuel, you have the status of a royal priest and are a brother or sister of Jesus Christ?
