The story of Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit is not unfamiliar to us. Yet we still live more easily persuaded by the fears and struggles before our eyes than by the reality that God has fulfilled His promise. Therefore, this old message — that God has fulfilled His promise through Jesus Christ — is a word to which we must once again give our attention today. What does it look like in our daily lives to live as people who believe the door has already been opened? What encouragement and hope do the events of Pentecost and their meaning offer to me today?

18. But whose sacrifice is this, after all? It is the once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus Christ—the event of the cross. In other words, when those anointed with the Spirit of the LORD at Pentecost speak in tongues, when children prophesy, young people see visions, and old people dream dreams, what makes all of this possible is the peace offering of the cross.
22. Therefore, the meaning of Pentecost is this: God’s covenant has been fulfilled through Jesus Christ. It is the day that proclaims that God has kept His promise. In history, He sent Jesus Christ to offer the once-for-all sacrifice, and through the merit of His blood, God sent His own Spirit—the Spirit of the LORD—which He had promised to give.
27. The event of Pentecost means that what God promised to us has been fulfilled. Through the cross of Jesus Christ, God has opened to us the gates of heaven that had been shut. Thus, everyone who calls upon the name of the LORD may enter by that way into the new heaven and the new earth.
The phenomena of Pentecost proclaim that God has truly fulfilled His promise through the cross of Jesus Christ, and they invite us today to lay down our fears and striving as well. As people who have already entered the new heaven and the new earth, what is one attitude, burden, or pattern you know you should let go of, yet continue to hold onto? This Pentecost, rather than once again dismissing it as “just the way things are,” name it honestly, and consider asking for prayer or practical help.
