Being called to be a blessing is a truly beautiful promise. And yet, when we look at Scripture, the lives of those whom God called blessed are strangely and consistently far from easy. Abraham had to leave. Isaac found himself walking again the path of fear his father had walked. Jacob confessed that he had lived through “hard and difficult years.” Joseph had to pass through a season of chains and imprisonment. Perhaps, even now, when we think of a “blessed life,” we quietly expect a life that is a little more stable, a little easier, a little smoother. Yet God often overturns such quiet expectations and leads His people not along comfortable roads, but through wilderness-like processes. Why does God deal with His people in this way? Is the “blessing” God speaks of completely different from what we imagine? Through today’s message, we hope to hear together why God still leads us into the wilderness even as He says to us, “You shall be a blessing.”

God said to Abraham, “You shall be a blessing.” But look at his life. He had to leave, wait, and be shaken. Isaac’s path was not easy either. Jacob himself says, “I have lived through hard and difficult years.” Joseph was bound in chains. Is this what a blessed life looks like? And yet, Scripture calls these very people blessed, God’s chosen people….

Why does God deal with His beloved people this way? Because He is shaping them into people who can reveal His saving purpose. God is not simply trying to make them successful. He intends that all nations would be blessed through them. Therefore, they themselves must become blessed people, and through their lives the world must come to see who God is and what kind of work He does…..

I wanted to become a good pastor. I wanted to become a faithful pastor, an influential preacher who builds the church through the Word. But desires like that do not become reality through good intentions alone. God is the One who shapes a person. Family struggles, relational difficulties, church challenges, failures, rebukes, inner weaknesses — these things are not accidental. God uses all of them to form us into people who can fulfill His purpose….

Look at the trees in spring. The new leaves are beautiful, but the spring winds are fierce. The trees are shaken violently. Yet those strong winds drive the roots deeper and make them stronger. Through that process, the tree becomes great enough for birds and people to find rest beneath it. Our lives are like that. “Suffering produces endurance, endurance produces refinement, and refinement produces hope.” In the end, hope is fulfilled. Why? Because even in the midst of suffering and refinement, God’s love continues to be poured out.

What do I usually expect a “blessed life” to look like? Looking at the lives of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph in today’s message, how does God’s understanding of a “blessed life” differ from my own expectations? Also, in the midst of my present difficulties or seasons of waiting, if God is shaping me into a blessed person — someone through whom He brings life and strengthens others — what kind of refining or training might God be allowing in my life right now?
