The rich fool in Jesus’ parable built barns to store his abundant harvest and expected to live in comfort for many years. Yet he failed to look to God, who would demand his life that very night. Hezekiah, by contrast, was told that everything he had proudly displayed would be carried off to Babylon and that his descendants would be taken captive. His response, however, was that it was enough for there to be peace during his own lifetime. Both men show us that even believers who have been saved may still fail to be rich toward God, remaining confined to their own plans and to the limits of what they themselves can see and enjoy. To be rich toward God is not to rely on or boast about what we possess or have achieved, but to depend on our relationship with God, the Lord of life and salvation. We must recognise that God, who has given us everything we have, is our true wealth.
Even after experiencing God’s wonderful deliverance, Hezekiah found himself boasting about his wealth and power. What causes me so easily to forget the times when God was with me and gave me victory?
Hezekiah acknowledged that God’s judgment was good, yet hoped for peace during his own lifetime. In what situations do I discover selfishness in myself that I had never expected?
Jesus called the person who stores up wealth for himself but is not rich toward God a fool. How would you define being rich toward God? Could there be a wise rich man, as opposed to a rich fool?
