[인트로]
인생에 큰 풍랑이 닥치면 사람의 진짜 모습이 드러난다고 합니다. 평소에는 보이지 않던 생각과 믿음, 그리고 우리가 정말 의지하고 있던 것이 그때 비로소 드러나기 때문입니다. 요나서 1장에 등장하는 배 위에도 그런 사람들이 있었습니다. 한편에는 살기 위해 각자의 신을 부르며 분주하게 움직이는 선장과 선원들이 있었고, 다른 한편에는 모든 사람이 두려움에 떨고 있는 가운데 배 밑에서 잠들어 있는 요나가 있었습니다.
얼핏 보면 선장과 선원들이 더 경건해 보이고, 더 열심히 신앙을 발휘하는 것처럼 보입니다. 반대로 요나는 무책임하고 이해할 수 없는 사람처럼 보이기도 합니다. 그러나 성경은 이 두 모습을 의도적으로 나란히 세워 놓고 우리에게 환난과 위기 앞에서 우리는 무엇을 붙들고 있는지, 우리는 무엇으로 자신을 설명하며, 무엇을 의지하며 살아가는지를 묻습니다.
나는 내가 능력이 있고, 위기에 빠르게 그리고 현명하게 대처하는 사람이기를 바랍니다. 그러나 실은 관건은 내가 누구 앞에 있으며, 그분은 나에게 어떤 분이신가에 있습니다. 오늘 말씀을 통해 잠 속에서나마 풍랑이 올 것을 예견하며 자신이 누구인지를 잊을 수 없었던 요나와, 그를 둘러싼 사람들의 모습을 함께 살펴보고자 합니다.
When a great storm strikes, people often say that a person’s true character is revealed. In such moments, thoughts, beliefs, and the things we truly rely upon come to the surface. The ship in Jonah 1 was filled with people like that. On one side were the captain and sailors, busily calling upon their various gods and doing everything they could to save themselves. On the other side was Jonah, asleep in the lower deck while everyone else trembled in fear.
At first glance, the captain and sailors appear more devout and more actively religious. Jonah, by contrast, seems irresponsible and difficult to understand. Yet Scripture intentionally places these two pictures side by side and asks us a deeper question: In the face of trouble and crisis, what are we really holding on to? How do we define ourselves, and what do we ultimately depend on?
I want to be someone who is capable, who responds quickly and wisely when difficulties arise. Yet the real question is not how capable I am, but before whom I stand and who He is to me. Through today’s passage, we will consider Jonah, who—even in his sleep—anticipated that the storm would come and could not forget who he was, as well as the people who surrounded him.

11. 지난 주에 우리는, 요나에 대해 말하기를, 그는 자가 하나님의 구원을 실패하게 하려는 의도를 가진 자라고 했습니다. 그는 하나님의 말씀을 피해서 도망가는 자이고, 또 적극적으로 자기 자신을 바다에 던지게 함으로써, 하나님의 뜻이 이 땅위에 이루어지지 못하도록 방해하는 자였지요. 그렇지만 그러한 그가, 소위 빛의 아들이란 말입니다. 이 세대의 아들이 아니라. 그래서 그의 신분은 하나님의 자녀라는 것입니다
17. 요나가 그 풍랑 속에서도 잠을 잘 수 있었던 이유를 살펴보시기 바랍니다. 일단 그는 그것을 예견하고 있었지요. 자기가 하나님의 뜻을 피해서 도망하는데, 하나님은 분명 자기를 찾으실 것이고, 자기를 찾으시되, 반드시 되찾으시기 위해서 풍랑도 마다하지 않을 것임을 알고 있었던 것입니다.
26. 그렇지 않습니까? 인생의 문제를 해결함에 있어서 우리의 학력과 출신과 능력과 재산이 무슨 소용이 있겠습니까? 열쇠는 우리가 누구이며, 또 어떤 하나님의 자녀인지에 달린 것입니다.
11. Last week we said of Jonah that he was a man intent on frustrating God’s work of salvation. He was one who fled from the Word of God, and who even went so far as to have himself thrown into the sea in an effort to prevent God’s will from being accomplished on the earth. Yet this very man is called a son of light, not a son of this age. His identity is that of a child of God.
17. Consider why Jonah was able to sleep through the storm. First of all, he had anticipated it. He knew that he was fleeing from the will of God, and that God would certainly come looking for him. More than that, he knew that God would stop at nothing—even sending a storm—in order to find him and bring him back.
26. Is that not true? When it comes to solving the problems of life, what use are our education, background, abilities, or wealth? The key lies in who we are, and in whose children we are.
오늘 말씀에서 선원들은 풍랑을 예상하지 못한 재앙으로 받아들였지만, 요나는 그 풍랑이 자신을 찾으시는 하나님의 손길임을 알고 있었습니다. 우리 역시 살아가며 다양한 문제와 어려움을 만납니다. 물론 모든 고난을 획일적으로 설명할 수는 없지만, 오늘 설교는 고난과 실패, 질병이나 관계의 문제조차 하나님께서 우리를 찾아오시는 과정으로 볼 수 있다고 말합니다. 이러한 관점에 대해 나는 어떻게 생각합니까? 그 고난 중에서 나는 어떤 방식으로 내가 하나님의 자녀임을 고백할 수 있을까요?
In today’s passage, the sailors viewed the storm as an unexpected disaster, while Jonah understood that the storm was God’s way of pursuing him. We too encounter many different problems and hardships in life. Of course, not every suffering can be explained in the same way, but today’s sermon suggests that even our struggles, failures, illnesses, and relational difficulties may be part of the way God comes to meet us. What do you think about this perspective? In the midst of such hardships, how can I confess and demonstrate that I am a child of God?
