[인트로]
예수님께서 무화과나무를 저주하시고 성전을 깨끗하게 하신 사건은 처음 읽을 때 쉽게 이해되지 않습니다. 왜 죄 없는 나무를 저주하셨는지, 왜 성전에서 그처럼 강하게 행동하셨는지 우리는 여러 질문을 하게 됩니다. 그러나 복음서는 이 두 사건을 따로 기록하지 않습니다. 무화과나무와 성전, 그리고 “하나님을 믿으라”는 말씀은 모두 하나로 이어지며, 우리를 십자가 앞으로 인도합니다. 그곳에서 참된 성전이 세워지고, 하나님께서 받으시는 참된 예배가 시작됩니다.
우리는 성경을 읽을 때 종종 먼저 우리 자신을 발견하고, 무엇을 더 해야 하는지, 어떤 열매를 맺어야 하는지를 찾으려 합니다. 그러나 오늘 말씀은 먼저 우리를 위해 아무 죄 없이 자신을 내어주신 예수 그리스도를 바라보라고 다시 한번 초대합니다. 그분은 우리에게 무엇을 요구하시기에 앞서, 친히 자신을 제물로 드려 우리를 하나님께 나아가게 하셨습니다.
At first reading, Jesus’ cursing of the fig tree and His cleansing of the temple are not easy to understand. Why would He curse a tree that had done nothing wrong? Why did He act with such force in the temple? These questions naturally arise as we read the passage. Yet the Gospels do not present these as separate events. The fig tree, the temple, and Jesus’ command, “Have faith in God,” all belong to one unfolding story that ultimately leads us to the cross. There, the true temple is established, and the worship that truly pleases the Father begins.
As we read Scripture, we often look first for ourselves—what we should do, how we should live, or what kind of fruit we ought to bear. But today’s passage invites us to look first to Jesus Christ, who willingly offered Himself without sin on our behalf. Before asking anything of us, He gave Himself as the perfect sacrifice, opening the way for us to come into the Father’s presence. May this passage once again draw our eyes to Christ and lead us to rest in the saving work that He has accomplished for us.
