Daniel’s prayer was a prayer of confession and supplication in which he laid bare what was in his heart before God. He openly confessed that he and Israel had sinned and failed to listen to God’s Word, and that their captivity in Babylon was God’s righteous judgment. Yet he did not ask to be taken out of that judgment. Instead, he acknowledged with thanksgiving that he himself was both the object of that judgment and a party to God’s covenant. Prayer is not about changing God’s will to suit me, but about discovering through God’s Word who I am and where my life stands within God’s history of redemption, and laying myself bare before Him.
Especially striking is the content of Daniel’s plea for forgiveness: that God would bring the seventy years of judgment He had appointed to their full completion, and afterward, as He had promised, make His face shine upon Jerusalem. Prayer, given as a privilege to God’s children, is not a means of moving God’s will in order to obtain what I want. Rather, it is to confess my sin and circumstances honestly before the Father’s Word, and with thanksgiving to acknowledge that I belong within His righteousness and His covenant.
What have I been praying about most often these days? As I look back at those prayers, how much of them consists of asking God for what I want, and how much consists of honestly laying my heart and circumstances before Him?
Rather than praying for his captivity simply to be taken away, Daniel understood through God’s Word that he himself stood within God’s judgment and covenant, and he prayed by acknowledging that reality. When I face hardship or an unwanted situation, do I mainly pray for it to be changed, or do I first seek to see, through God’s Word, who I am and where I stand before Him?
Daniel laid his sin and circumstances openly before God, while acknowledging God’s righteousness and covenant with thanksgiving. What do I need to lay honestly before God and confess right now? And even in the midst of it, what can I gratefully acknowledge about God’s will and His work?
