Colossians 3.1–11 Above

1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

Notice that you have been raised with Christ, not if you are or if you will be -> this is the ground for your seeking things above

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

Above means not below. The two are opposite. Above is also not high up in the sky, but next to you where Christ is seated in the throne (Rev.4)!

For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

The ground for to think above (i.e. with Christ) is again that you have died (the same tense as you have been raised). Your self-seeking, going-against-God self has died. And the risen one, a new self, has the same nature with God and Christ.

When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

The nature of my new self is so identical to that of Christ, Christ’s life can be called mine! The full scope of it will be revealed when Christ comes again.

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

Therefore! Since Christ has done all these things for us. The whole business of dying and being raised – dealing with our old selves and giving us new selves just as his! Put to death! Treat them as dead (NASB). Do not try to shake and wake it up or pretend it is not dead, because it is dead. Not just greed, but the whole list of things add up to our self worship. My self-worshipping self has been put to death. I need to remember it. Because the rest of the world goes on around me every day every minute saying it is not dead!

Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.

The ideology and practice of self-worshipping, though it has been killed and buried as far as I am concerned, still exists in the world as the leading principle. God is surely going to deal with it. So stand aside!

You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.

Yes. This was where we belonged before. Even before the time we can remember.

But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

But now because of Christ’s work done for us, getting ourselves out of it for good, we are to make sure we do not live as if he has not done it for me.

Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices

Particularly with things concerning Christ, not to obscure what he has done and what it means for us. That is, gone are the old self and old action.

10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

So given new self is totally new but at the same time progressively new because the understanding of our God who is infinite is endless. But the fascinating thing is this ever so ‘renewing’ is not in the future, but happening now here!  (without the world recognising it – thus it is a secret, a mystery)

11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

Such renewal applies to all in the same manner, however different you might think you are, you are no exception. Christ makes you in, and you are in for good. There are no other conditions, no but’s. Christ is the only reason. And that is enough full stop.

Lord, it is overwhelming to think where we belong. I am told many times that I belong with you, but every time it comes strange and new. Give me the faith to believe that I belong with you, because of you. Let me live it by purposefully removing the stain of self-worshipping I sometimes mistaken as still living. The lion has died; let me be a happy living dog (Eccl 9:4).
