As we come to the final chapter of Jonah, our attention is naturally drawn to Jonah’s anger. He cannot bear the fact that Nineveh has been forgiven, and he even says that he would rather die than witness God’s mercy toward his enemies. Yet it seems that Scripture is aiming at something deeper than Jonah’s emotional outburst. As we follow the unusual details of the narrative—the east, the east wind, Jonah’s shelter, and the kikayon that God prepared—we begin to discover that Jonah has never been the true main character of the story. His thoughts, emotions, prayers, and even the direction of his life all remained under God’s sovereign hand.

Jonah knew God’s grace and compassion better than anyone. Yet he struggled to accept that this same love would extend to the people he hated. Perhaps he wanted God’s mercy to remain within the boundaries of his own desires. But God was not content merely to save Nineveh. He also refused to give up on Jonah, whose heart still struggled to yield completely to His will. As we study today’s passage, may we discover whom the shade of the kikayon ultimately points to, and how God’s love continues to transform not only those who have yet to believe, but also those who already belong to Him.

Jonah knew God’s grace and compassion well, yet he struggled to accept that the same grace would extend to the people he hated. Is there someone to whom you find it difficult to see God’s mercy extended? What part of your heart do you think God is seeking to transform today?
