Our problem when we worry about our needs is not simply that we lack what we need, but that we do not fully trust our relationship with God—the Lord of heaven and earth, who is our Father and holds us fast by His promise. Although we know in our heads that God already knows what we need, even as believers, we find it difficult to move beyond seeking God, like the pagans do, simply to have our needs met.
The command to seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness is not a condition or a secret formula for obtaining food, drink, and clothing. We are the ones who seek God’s kingdom and righteousness, while God is the One who adds everything we need. Just as the prodigal son, even in his hunger, returned home first calling out to his father, and the father freely gave him the best robe and prepared a feast, our part is not to worry about what we will eat, drink, or wear, but to remember that we have a Father and to seek His kingdom and His righteousness.
Jesus tells us that our heavenly Father already knows what we need, yet He also teaches us to pray, “Give us today our daily bread.” What is the difference between bringing our needs before God and repeatedly asking for them out of anxiety?
Have you ever understood the words, “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness,” as a condition—as though, if we do this, then God will give us what we need? If even seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness can become a means of getting what we want, how can we examine what we are truly seeking?
The sermon says, “We are the ones who seek, and God is the One who adds.” When we face real needs concerning finances, health, work, or our children, what would it look like—in our prayers and in our daily lives—to acknowledge those needs while entrusting to our Father the work of “adding” what we need and seeking His kingdom and righteousness ourselves?
