니느웨 백성은 금식하고 굵은 베를 입으며 악한 길에서 돌이켰고, 하나님께서는 그 모습을 감찰하시고 예고하셨던 재앙을 내리지 않으셨습니다. 그러나 니느웨 왕은 자신들의 회개로 반드시 구원받을 것이라고 확신하지 않았습니다. 그가 붙잡은 것은 “누가 알겠느냐?”라는 한 가닥 희망이었습니다. 이와 달리 이미 죽음에서 건짐받은 요나는 살기 위한 조건으로 기도하지 않습니다. 그는 감사함으로 하나님께 제사를 드리고 서원을 갚겠다고 고백합니다. 그런데 이 두 이야기를 읽는 우리는 쉽게 니느웨의 회개와 하나님의 구원을 하나의 인과관계로 묶어, ‘그들이 회개했기 때문에 하나님께서 구원하셨다’고 결론 내립니다.
그러나 한 사건에서 나타난 하나님의 일하심을 언제 어디서나 반복되는 법칙으로 일반화할 수는 없습니다. 니느웨의 회개도, 광야에서 자신을 감찰하시고 생명으로 이끄시는 하나님을 만난 하갈의 경험도, ‘내가 이렇게 하면 하나님께서 이렇게 하신다’는 공식이 될 수 없습니다. 회개하고 금식하며 겸손히 부르짖으면 하나님께서 언제나 내가 원하는 방식으로 응답하실 것이라고 생각한다면, 어느새 하나님 자신보다 내가 경험하고 이해한 하나님을 붙들게 될 수 있습니다. 감찰하시는 하나님은 우리의 경험이나 행동에 의해 움직이시는 분이 아니라, 우리의 경험보다 크시며 자신의 뜻대로 일하시는 하나님이십니다.
When the people of Nineveh fasted, put on sackcloth, and turned from their evil ways, God saw what they did and did not bring upon them the destruction He had threatened. Yet the king of Nineveh was not certain that their repentance would necessarily save them. What he held on to was only a thread of hope: “Who knows?” Jonah, by contrast, had already been delivered from death and did not pray as a condition for staying alive. He confessed that he would offer sacrifice to God with thanksgiving and fulfill what he had vowed. Yet as readers of these two accounts, we easily connect Nineveh’s repentance and God’s deliverance in a simple cause-and-effect relationship and conclude, “God saved them because they repented.”
But we cannot generalize God’s work in one event into a rule that will be repeated always and everywhere. Neither Nineveh’s repentance nor Hagar’s experience in the wilderness of meeting the God who saw her and led her to life can become a formula that says, “If I do this, God will do that.” If we assume that whenever we repent, fast, and cry out humbly, God will always respond in the way we want, we may find ourselves holding on not to God Himself but to the God we have experienced and understood. The God who watches over us is not moved by our experiences or actions; He is greater than our experience and works according to His own will.

1. 나는 하나님께 간절히 기도하거나 회개한 뒤 좋은 결과를 경험했던 일을 근거로, “내가 이렇게 하면 하나님은 이렇게 하실 것이다”라는 나만의 공식을 가지고 있지는 않습니까? 내가 경험한 하나님과 성경이 계시하는 하나님을 구별하기 위해 무엇이 필요할까요?
Have I ever taken an experience in which earnest prayer or repentance was followed by a good outcome and turned it into a personal formula: “If I do this, God will do that”? What can help me distinguish between the God I have experienced and the God revealed in Scripture?

The Ninevites fasted, put on sackcloth, and turned from their evil ways, yet even their king said, “Who knows?” When I repent, what am I hoping for? Do I ever use repentance as a means of persuading God to give me the outcome I want?
3. 설교는 우리가 믿고 회개하며 회개에 합당한 열매를 맺어야 하지만, 우리를 구원하는 근거는 그리스도의 십자가라고 말합니다. 내가 하나님 앞에 설 때 마음 깊은 곳에서 의지하는 것은 나의 믿음과 회개의 진실함입니까, 아니면 나를 위해 죽으신 그리스도와 그의 십자가입니까?
The sermon teaches that although we are called to believe, repent, and bear fruit in keeping with repentance, the ground of our salvation is the cross of Christ. When I stand before God, what am I really relying on deep within my heart—the sincerity of my own faith and repentance, or Christ who died for me and His cross?
