사무엘이 자라던 때에는 여호와의 말씀이 희귀하고 이상이 흔히 보이지 않았습니다. 결코 하나님의 계시가 희미해졌거나 여호와의 등불이 꺼져 가고 있지 않았지만 그 계시와 빛을 받아야 할 인간의 눈이 어두워지고 있었습니다. 하나님께서는 그런 때에 사무엘을 부르시며 새로운 시대를 여셨습니다. 이상에서 부르심으로, 보는 것에서 듣는 것으로 계시의 방편은 달라졌지만, 계시하시고 부르시는 주체는 언제나 하나님이셨습니다.
“하나님이 들으셨다”는 뜻의 이름을 갖게 된 사무엘. 그를 간구하고 받은 사람은 한나였지만, 한나는 자신이 구했다는 사실보다 하나님께서 들으셨다는 사실을 고백합니다. 믿음은 내가 얼마나 간절히 구했고, 얼마나 잘 들었으며, 얼마나 제대로 응답했는지를 중심에 놓는 것이 아니라 이 모든 것 위에 주인되시고 주체가 되시는 하나님을 인정하는 것입니다. 내가 들어서 하나님을 만난 것이 아니라 주께서 나를 부르셨고, 내가 얻어 낸 것이 아니라 하나님께서 들으시고 주셨음을 고백하며, “주여, 내가 여기 있나이다. 주의 종이 듣겠나이다”라고 일어서는 주의 자녀되기를 소원합니다.
In Samuel’s time, the word of the LORD was rare, and visions were not common. Yet this did not mean that God’s revelation had grown dim or that the lamp of the LORD was going out. Rather, the eyes of those who were to receive His revelation and light were growing dim. It was at such a time that God called Samuel and opened a new era. The means of revelation changed from vision to calling, from seeing to hearing, but the One who revealed and called was always God.
Samuel was given a name meaning “God has heard.” Hannah was the one who asked God for a son and received him, yet rather than emphasizing the fact that she had asked, she confessed that God was the One who had heard. Faith does not place at the centre how earnestly I have prayed, how well I have listened, or how properly I have responded. Rather, it is to acknowledge God as the Lord and the One who acts over all these things. I did not meet God because I managed to hear Him; the Lord called me. I did not obtain what I have; God heard and gave. May we confess this and rise as His children, saying, “Lord, here I am. Your servant is listening.”
[묵상 질문]
1. 나는 하나님께서 침묵하시는 것처럼 느껴지거나 말씀을 깨닫기 어려운 때에, 무엇을 탓하는 편인가요? 그런 때에도 변함없이 말씀하시고 일하시는 하나님을 신뢰한다는 것은 나에게 어떤 모습일까요?
When it feels as though God is silent or I find it difficult to understand His Word, what do I tend to blame? What would it look like for me to trust that God continues to speak and work faithfully even at such times?
2. 한나는 자신이 하나님께 아들을 간구했지만, 그 아들의 이름을 “하나님이 들으셨다”는 뜻의 사무엘이라고 지으며 하나님께 주체의 자리를 돌려 드렸습니다. 나의 기도의 결과라고 생각할 만한 일들 가운데, “내가 (기도)한 것”으로 보는 것과 “하나님께서 하신 것”으로 보는 것의 차이는 무엇일까요?
Hannah asked God for a son, yet she named him Samuel, meaning “God has heard,” giving God the place of the One who acts. Among the things in my life that I might regard as results of my prayers, what difference does it make to see them as “what I did (through prayer)” rather than “what God has done”?
3. 어린 사무엘을 통해 새로운 시대를 여시는 하나님은 부르시고, 그 부르심을 듣게도 하시고 깨닫게도 하시는 온전히 주체적인 분이십니다. 내가 듣지 못하는 순간에도 계속 부르시고 일하시는 하나님을 인정하고, 부르시는 순간에 응답하기 위해 내가 할 수 있는 일은 무엇일까요?
God, who opened a new era through the young Samuel, is wholly the One who acts: He calls, enables us to hear His calling, and enables us to recognize it. What can I do to acknowledge the God who continues to call and work even when I do not hear Him, and to respond when He calls?
