The people in the days of Noah were so caught up in human affairs that they failed to recognize what God was doing until the flood came and destroyed them. Bound up in the things of this life, they forgot the destiny and promise God had appointed for humanity. God had already said to Adam, “You will surely die,” and for many years people had watched those words come true as human beings grew old and died. Yet they continued to worry about what they would eat, what they would drink, and what they would wear, living as though they would remain on this earth forever. By the time the rain finally began to fall, it was already too late.
The days of Noah are an age in which God’s promise and the hope that waits for its fulfilment have grown dim. If, among us today, speaking of God’s promise, waiting for it, and hoping in it are also growing dim, and if we live so absorbed in the life before our eyes that we forget the end God has appointed, then this is indeed the days of Noah. May we be believers who remember that this earth is not our eternal home, who know God’s promise, and who wait for its fulfilment.
The people in the days of Noah were so caught up in eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage that they failed to recognize what God was doing. What is taking up most of my thoughts, time, and heart these days and keeping me from seeing God’s Word and what He is doing?
The people in the days of Noah continued to see death around them, yet they lived as though they themselves would remain on this earth forever. What am I worrying about or treating as important because I too assume that life here will simply continue? If I truly remembered that this earth is not my eternal home, what would change in my life now?
Abraham lived as a stranger in tents on this earth because he was looking forward to the city God would build. What promise of God am I remembering and waiting for now? What can I put into practice now so that I may know that promise more deeply and live in hope of it?
