15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
Explanation about the Son in whom we are, the one with whom we are united, in whom we are redeemed and forgiven (v.14).
16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.
Why the work of this Son was so significant and powerful enough to redeem us – he was before all things, all things created in him and through him – He is the Creator!
17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
He is the Governor = in other words he is just God Himself!
18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.
Yet he became man so that he can become our head and our hope out of death and all fear that death fruits.
19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,
‘For’ always tells us the reason why for what’s just gone before. Thus, the Son has done that = became man when he was God and became our head, because it was what God wanted. It was God’s fullness.
20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
Him would be the Son and himself would be the Father. (What is in the Son is of course the Spirit.) And they together willed and acted the work of ‘redemption’ and forgiveness so that we may be back with God, ‘reconciled’ to him again.
Many times we underestimate ourselves, thinking as if believing in God was our choice. No. We did not choose it out of many religions, because it seemed relatively most noble compared to others. It was not because our parents were already attending church before we were even born. It involved God becoming man and death of God for me to believe in him. If I thought I did it, I am under-valuing far too much what took place for me. So without sounding conceited, I can say ‘I am so worthy’. Take heart, Christ our God not only died for you but was raised for you. Remember it (even when you don’t feel like it).
Lord, I am too dragged down by life’s everyday chores and luggage to live out your passion – the passion that did not hesitate to become man, die, and be raised again for me. Yet let me not forget that this is my base and what preserves my breath. By remembering your work let me give back to you the least honour you deserve and sustain through today.
